Alternative Energy

Alternative Energy is energy fuelled in ways that do not require the earth's natural resources or otherwise harm the environment, especially by avoiding the use of fossil fuels or nuclear power.

 
Biogas Monitoring & Analysis

Biogas is produced in anaerobic digestors through the breakdown of food scraps, animal waste, and other organic matter by microorganisms in an environment that lacks oxygen.


The composition of biogas is largely made up of methane and carbon dioxide, however, it can sometimes include trace amounts of siloxanes, hydrogen sulphide, and some moisture; the amounts of these vary based upon the types of organic material that is being used to produce the biogas.


By using one of our 4Gas Monitors (located on our Confined Space page) you can help to provide a greater understanding of what is happening in the plant and aid in maintaining stability.


Additionally, the costs of monitoring are often significantly lower than the revenue that is lost when re-establishing a destabilised plant.


In addition a Fixed Gas Detection system would also assist with continuous sampling and data logging over a larger fixed area. By using the Fixed Gas Detection system you are able to monitor toxins without individuals present. This is a desirable function especially if the plant is not fully supervised 24/7.


Both methods of detection are invaluable to maintain safety and efficiency on site, whilst providing opportunity to experiment with alternative processes and having the capability to record and trace the effectiveness of their experiments.


 
Landfill Gas Monitoring and Analysis

Landfill gas is a naturally occurring by-product of organic material decomposition in landfills. The composition typically around 50% Carbon Dioxide and 50% Methane as well as a small amount of other non-methane compounds. Gas produced by landfill is harnessed and deployed much in the same way as biogas as in that it can be fed into an engine to generate power.


The production of landfill gas occurs when the organic materials in a landfill begin to decompose and over many years can become steady enough that it is possible to harness the gas produced and use it to power generators and produce electricity.


Landfill gas needs to be monitored as it can provide important advance warnings of underground gas migrations from landfills, which could indicate that control measures have failed.

This is damaging because the gas produced by landfills, methane, is toxic and more harmful to the planet than carbon dioxide. By monitoring landfill gas, indicators of any control measure failures can be caught earlier and resolved before the problem becomes hazardous.


By using one of our MultiRAE (located on our Multi Gas page) you will have the capabilities to monitor Carbon Dioxide and Methane. This instrument will be essential for individual detection and has data logging functions, this data will assist with health and safety on site including exposure control plans and risk assessments.

 
Bio Methane Generation

Gas to Grid networks are increasing in the UK and Ireland. BioMethane generation is a greener alternative to fracking or mining for natural gas and is used as an alternative fuel in HGVs. The gas enters the grid or is compressed into storage tanks, its composition must be carefully monitored.


Measuring the impurities in the Biomethane is crucial to ensure the gas network continues to run smoothly. Our MultiGas Monitors ensure readings of the BioMethane components are accurate, allowing individuals to act accordingly, preserving the site.



We would suggest a Crowcon GasPro 5 for individual detection in this industry as these MultiGas Monitors have the capacity to monitor CH4, CO2 and H2S.

These gases are most common in the BioMethane Generation industry. By using safety monitor instrumentation you are able to monitor, record and store the data. Subsequently this data can give a true indication of individual exposure if correctly maintained (serviced and calibrated).


A Fixed Gas Detection system would benefit a BioMethane Generation site due to the advantages of continuous monitoring. No individuals have to be present for the toxin to be detected which means that risk is lowered. This system is particularly desirable if the site is not fully supervised 24/7. In addition Fixed Gas Detection systems can be installed to trigger sounder beacons, ventilation and trigger shut-off protocols.
